Beaches √ Scuba X Antiquities X Religion X Speleo √ Natural wonders √ Walk √ Traditional settlements √
Serifos the Erotic Island
An island of strong contrasts with an active magnetic field created by its metalliferous rocks Leeward coasts embraced by steep rocks, almost all of them enjoying thick natural shade from salt cedars growing in the sand, with crystal blue waters, golden beaches and villages with small white houses are some of the island’s features
Hora
a bunch of white cubes embracing, in clearly traditional Cycladic architecture, the small church of Saint Konstantinos at the top (on 251 m. altitude) of the steep rock, among which a labyrinth of cobbled walkways is unfolded. In Pano Hora, inside the castle, the neoclassical Town Hall building (built in 1907) predominates over one of the most beautiful squares in the Cyclades, covered with marble slabs and equipped with exits to all directions. A few meters lower, the busy square of Myloi is embosomed by stores and bars of every type, while the remnants of the old wind mills remind of activities of the past. In Kato Hora, the small theatre of the Association of Serifians with its enchanting view to the Aegean Sea is hidden next to the gradational old road made of Serifian stones polished by the hooves of donkeys throughout the centuries.
The castle- monastery of Taksiarches
The monastery, built in 1572, with a fortress construction with high surrounding wall, embrasures, small openings on the walls and one and only unit gate (low loggia) 4 meters' tall, without a permanent ladder, to guard the icon of Taksiarches from Cyprus that has found there a refuge, predominates the north-eastern part of the island. It had acquired great wealth and reputation which enticed attacks by pirates and forced the monks to be also fighters. The temple presents significant architectural interest, has three niches, a single room with cupola, a wonderful iconostasis and old wall paintings and hosts at the center of the flooring a marble plate depicting the two-headed eagle that dates back to 1659.
Koutalas
The Throne of the Cyclops, the White Tower and the Old Lady's Castle is a legacy rooted in the Hellenistic period or earlier. The impressive rail system on cobbled roads and ramps, through which the wagons transferred the ore from the mountains to the runs for loading and were returned, empty to the mountains as a counterweight. The Koutalas (or Stavrakopoulos) cave, with wonderful stalactites and stalagmites presents archaeological interest due to crystallized ancient clay appliances found there.
